Life Lessons from Children

Keeping your house clean with six children can be quite the challenge.

When we put our house on the market a few weeks back, I had visions of grandeur! I just knew that as a family we would rise to the occasion and our house would miraculously stay clean.

Fast foreword to today. Because of our busy schedules, the house has gotten a little messy. I keep waiting for that dreaded phone call from our Realtor saying that someone wants to come and look at our house in the next 30 minutes. I keep thinking that we need a wake up call like that.

My husband has had his own plans for a wake up call... He noticed that an empty Gatorade bottle had been deposited on the hallway floor. Just for fun, he placed a $1 bill inside and placed it on the den floor, in plain view. A few hours later that bottle was gone. We called all of the kids into the room to see which of our children was gracious enough to have picked up the bottle.

Much to our dismay, they all said, "What bottle?"

Turns out, someone had kicked it under the sofa!!! LOL! We pulled it out and Dad pocketed the dollar in front of the kids. They were all bummed that they hadn't found the bill. Thus the object lesson to PICK UP THE TRASH, because you never know when Dad might hide a dollar in it.

This got me thinking. I wonder how often God places trash in plain view and waits to see which of His children will stop to pick it up. Of course the trash I'm referring to are the unsaved people we come in contact with (We were all once trash - until we were cleansed by the blood of Jesus). The reward, treasure's in heaven.

We just put our house up for sale too...and I totally relate to the "pain" of trying to keep everything in top notch shape...although I am pretty sure if cash were involved my kids would be motivated!

Great spritual application too!

Good luck on the sell of your house.

Great analogy! If only moms could find a dollar in every thing we pick up off the floor! How rich we would be!

Is this why my husband keeps leaving dollar bills in his pockets...so I'll do the laundry?? LOL! Great lesson!

Small thoughts...turn to Large Thoughts sometimes, doesn't it. God is so wonderful, using our everyday lives to speak to us.

What a great idea. I wonder if it would work for my teenage daughter to get her to clean her room? Boy, I would need alot of dollar bills. LOL

What a great object lesson. Your kids will remember it forever! (I'm visiting from the Titus 2 blogroll. You have a beautiful blog!)

I loved this, Sonya. It's funny but a powerful tool to teach your kids...we all know that money talks!

When our (now 19 year old) son was about 11 or 12, he would not turn off his bedroom light. My husband started charging him $1 every time he left the light on. In just a few weeks the problem was solved.

There are so many small things that could be cleaned up to help someone out....folks we don't even know. There was a shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot driving lane. Someone just had to move it back into the corral. I wonder how many folks drove around the lane before I moved it....

And, it's so true, God may be placing things right before our very eyes. How great is our vision?

You all generate some great analogies over there.

Sonya,

How funny as this brought back many memories from my childhood.

At the end of each night, my parents would go around the house with a box and pick up everything that didn't belong, toys, jackets, shoes, you name it.

Then at the end of the week if we wanted it back, we had to buy it back from our parents with our allowance. Not the way we wanted to spend our money, but it did get us to realize that we had to pick it up or else.

I guess consequences are a good thing in order to force us to learn lessons we wouldn't want to learn any other way.

Oh, my! That is too funny! I bet the kids will do a better job of picking up (at least for the next few days:-)

This was a great analogy:-)

Your husband is a smart cookie! I usually find articles of clothing flung around the house (especially coats). If I find something, I'll lay it in the middle of the floor and walk on it whenever I go through that room just to get my point across!
